David Allan Cates has worked with the Missoula Writing Collaborative since 1996. He is the author of three novels, Hunger in America, X out of Wonderland, and Freeman Walker, and won the 2010 Montana Arts Council Artist Innovation Award in prose. He has published numerous short stories in literary magazines, and his story “Rubber Boy” has was selected as a notable story in the 2010 Best American Short Stories. His travel writing has appeared in Canoe and Kayak, Outside Magazine, and The New York Times Sophisticated Traveler Magazine. He is the executive director of Missoula Medical Aid, and leads groups of medical professionals on trips to Honduras, where they work to bring health care to rural communities and hospitals.
