This year is the centennial of the Pulitzer Prize. In celebration, we are highlighting Pulitzer-Prize winnning poets, along with Humanities Montana. Here is an example of how a great poem, in this case, W. S. Merwin’s “The Vixen,” inspired one young writer. This exercise comes from our writer Marnie Prange.
NORTHERN PIKE
by Peter from Rattlesnake School
Slivers of green as it shoots
through the water weeds trembling behind it
ruler of the dark and mysterious
moonlit water
waiting and ambushing prey bright
gleaming teeth flash through the water
as startled prey is torn apart.
attacking anything that moves
always hungry always moving
